The Hole Truth
The Myth; A
single-stage fan can outperform Vac-Con's 3-stage fan. That's what the
people at Proline Vactor Services Inc. were told by a dealer representing
one of Vac-Con's competitors.
Proline already had a Vac-Con model V390SHA and needed
another truck to keep up with a rapidly increasing work load. They leased a
new single-stage machine based on the competitors above statement. At the
end of the first day in the field, according to Todd Blum, president of
Proline, the guy's had a different opinion than the dealers about the new
machines performance. "Yeah their comment to us was, there's
something wrong with this machine!" Blum states. The new truck
was not able to load as much material as fast as the Vac-Con.
The truck was returned to the dealer for repair. Paul
Possanza, VP of Proline say's "they (the manufacturer) called on
the phone and they said there's nothing wrong with the truck, the truck is
fine." Todd Blum adds, "I think we complained enough
and then finally, the salesman says, well... let's do the test (Manometer
Test) and I'll prove to you that this truck does what we said it would
do"
The Manometer gauges and plates were applied to both
machines and the competitor's truck performed as claimed... but the guys
from Proline couldn't see how the results of the Manometer test applied to
the real world. So, just to see what would happen, a manhole cover was
placed under the vacuum tube of the Vac-Con. "(we) just set it on
the ground and put the Vac-Con probably about 6-8 inches above it...it just
Phhhht!!!" Blum said "Pulled it right up!"
Possanza adds.
"The operator got up on it and he's probably 250
lbs., jumped up and down on it and it wouldn't give," says
Blum. The other machine struggled to lift the cover and, Blum
continues, "as soon as he (the dealer) put his foot on it, it
fell right off."
Proline then requested that the two combination machines be
compared, side by side, vacuuming up material. Two piles of sand were
chosen. "Vac-Con sucked right into it! Had a big hole all the way
around it. Then the competitor, when he stuck it in... it was just a hole
and he went over and was working the tube to make it suck,"
Blum states.
Todd Blum's final comment to the dealer about the Manometer
test and his machine was, "Sure, it's sucking air. How many
customers do you get that call and ask you to come over and suck air?
Never! Never!! There is never a time when that truck is going to outperform
the Vac-Con!"
That's The Hole Truth.
